Liberamente ispirato a un periodo della vita di Matteo Messina Denaro, Il film racconta la storia del mondo che gli volteggia spericolatamente intorno e protegge il mistero tragico e farsesco della sua prolungata latitanza. Un mondo nel quale gli azzardi e le crisi esistenziali non danno mai gli esiti sperati.
La carriera politica di Catello è andata in fumo dopo una sentenza di una manciata anni per associazione mafiosa. Ha perso tutto, e non esistono bugie o illusionismi in grado di resuscitare la sua fedina penale. Dunque, quando i servizi segreti gli chiedono di collaborare per catturare il suo figlioccio Matteo Messina Denaro - l'ultimo grande capo mafioso ancora in libertà - Catello intravede la possibilità di rimettersi in carreggiata e decide di accettare, instaurando un bizzarro scambio epistolare con il latitante.
